New MS Tool: Good and Bad
So here's the deal. Microsoft has had so much cum on its face from Sircam and Code Red and Hotmail getting hacked, that it's released a new "tool" for finding security holes, weak settings, and uninstalled patches. So what happens? Wired gets 8 geeks in a room who all feel they've been judiciously running Windows Update and keeping up on security alerts to make sure they're OK.

And they discover they're fucked.

"I know it sounds bizarre, but I was pretty proud of my ability to keep up with Microsoft patches. It's like you are a macho geek if you can keep up with all this stuff," Gerome said. "But now I'm starting to wonder whether catching all the fixes that Microsoft releases is beyond any mere mortal's power."

The Internet Archive is the most incredible procrastination machine cum research tool since Everything2. Run by Alexa, the people responsible for crappy "What's Related" plugins and buttons, it's an archive of the ENTIRE INTERNET, THROUGHOUT TIME. No shit kids, this is intense.

I was asked the other day why I was laughing at dire news reports of the Code Red virus, and not the least bit scared. Well, first, I knew it was an MSTD: Microsoft-Transmitted Disease. Secondly, it was nothing to be scared of if you have two brain cells to rub together:

Why Worms Like Code Red Are Good For You

In the vast world of potential Internet viruses and worms, Code Red is a grade Z microbe. It would have to go through a significant amount of mutation before it became any sort of serious threat to the Internet's health. So watching the FBI and Microsoft put on their most serious face at Monday's press conference was like a scene from some diabolical 50's sci-fi movie: Attack of the Killer 0.5 in. Ants.

For Microsoft, this was the kind of publicity you just can't buy. Not only did Redmond get to share a dais with the Justice Department ? which is rather like Stalin vowing eternal friendship with Roosevelt to counter the Nazi menace ? but they also had their name inextricably linked with the well-being of the Internet itself.

"Shamelessly ripped from Mozilla.org, "Talkback data shows that recent 0.9.2 branch builds are more stable than Netscape 4.78 and we expect even better results for 0.9.3. Now is the time to try Mozilla again if you've been waiting for stability to improve." Translation: Mozilla is better than ever."
